CLINICAL TRIALS
Bevasiranib is a new drug that is currently being evaluated in clinical trials to determine whether it is safe and effective for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In previous clinical studies for wet AMD, bevasiranib appeared to be safe and well-tolerated by patients.

Research has shown that a protein called Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is a factor in the development of abnormal blood vessels in eyes with wet AMD. VEGF is associated with the vision loss that can occur as a result of wet AMD. Bevasiranib is a drug molecule which reduces the production of VEGF by a newly discovered technology known as RNA interference. Bevasiranib has been shown to reduce VEGF in human retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Furthermore, bevasiranib and its related drug candidates have inhibited the growth of abnormal blood vessels in disease models of wet AMD and in patients with wet AMD. These abnormal blood vessels are also associated with symptoms of wet AMD, including vision loss.

New clinical trials are currently underway to continue the evaluation of the safety and efficacy of bevasiranib in patients with wet AMD.

If you or a family member or friend has recently been diagnosed with the wet form of age-related macular degeneration and would like to get more information about this study, including finding out if you are eligible to participate and how to find a participating doctor near you please email: clinicaltrials@OPKO.com.
